Trauma & EMDR Therapy in Snohomish County, WA
Trauma can affect the way you feel, think, relate to others, and move through everyday life long after a difficult experience has ended.
Sometimes the connection is obvious. You may find yourself thinking about a painful experience over and over, avoiding reminders of what happened, or feeling anxious when something brings you back to that moment.
Other times, trauma can be harder to recognize. You may feel unusually reactive, disconnected from yourself, constantly on edge, or overwhelmed by emotions that seem bigger than the situation in front of you.
At Motherhood Wellness Clinic, we provide trauma-informed therapy for women and mothers who want to understand how past experiences may still be affecting their emotional wellbeing, relationships, nervous system, and sense of self.
Our goal is not simply to help you cope with symptoms. Together, we work to understand what has happened, how those experiences may still be showing up in your life, and what healing can look like moving forward.
What Is Trauma?
Trauma is not defined only by what happened to you.
Two people can experience similar circumstances and respond very differently. What matters is how an experience affected you and how your mind and body learned to respond to it.
After a frightening, overwhelming, painful, or deeply distressing experience, your nervous system may continue reacting as though the danger is still present—even when you know intellectually that the experience is over.
You may notice anxiety, panic, numbness, hypervigilance, intrusive memories, emotional reactivity, difficulty trusting others, or feeling disconnected from yourself or your body.
Sometimes a smell, place, person, conversation, medical experience, or other seemingly small reminder can suddenly bring strong emotions or physical reactions to the surface.
Therapy can help you begin understanding those responses rather than simply feeling controlled by them.
Trauma Can Take Many Forms
Trauma does not always come from one dramatic event.
It can develop through experiences that happened once, repeatedly, or over many years.
At Motherhood Wellness Clinic, trauma-informed therapy may address experiences such as:
- Birth trauma
- Difficult pregnancy or postpartum experiences
- Childhood trauma or painful childhood experiences
- Relational trauma
- Abuse or neglect
- Intergenerational trauma
- PTSD or complex trauma
- Distressing medical experiences
- Pregnancy loss or other reproductive experiences
- Difficult memories that continue affecting your life
- Experiences that have contributed to negative beliefs about yourself
You do not need to decide whether what happened to you was “bad enough” to deserve support.
If an experience continues affecting how you feel, how your body responds, how you relate to others, or how you see yourself, it may be worth exploring. Motherhood Wellness Clinic's existing trauma work includes birth trauma, childhood wounds, relational trauma, PTSD/C-PTSD, and reproductive experiences.
How Trauma Can Show Up in Everyday Life
Trauma can look different for everyone.
You may notice:
- Anxiety or panic
- Feeling constantly alert or unable to relax
- Intrusive thoughts or distressing memories
- Nightmares or difficulty sleeping
- Avoiding people, places, conversations, or experiences that remind you of what happened
- Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected
- Dissociation
- Strong reactions to particular triggers
- Difficulty trusting or feeling safe in relationships
- Negative beliefs about yourself
- Feeling powerless, ashamed, or stuck
- Difficulty connecting with your body
- Depression or emotional overwhelm
For mothers, trauma can also affect pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum recovery, bonding, relationships, and the transition into motherhood.
Trauma Therapy at Motherhood Wellness Clinic
We approach trauma therapy from a holistic and relational perspective.
Your mental health does not exist separately from the rest of your life. Past experiences, relationships, physical health, stress, caregiving responsibilities, reproductive experiences, and your current environment can all affect emotional wellbeing.
Therapy provides a space to slow down and begin making sense of those connections.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we work to understand the experiences and patterns underneath them and help you develop greater awareness, emotional regulation, resilience, and connection.
Depending on your needs, treatment at Motherhood Wellness Clinic may incorporate evidence-based approaches including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), narrative therapy, attachment-based interventions, and other trauma-informed approaches.
EMDR Therapy
Sometimes you can understand an experience intellectually and still feel as though your body or emotions have not caught up.
You may know that the experience is over.
You may know that you are safe now.
You may even understand why you react the way you do.
And yet certain memories, situations, or triggers can still create intense emotional or physical reactions.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach used to help people process distressing and traumatic experiences.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—often through guided eye movements—as part of a structured therapeutic process designed to help the brain reprocess distressing memories and the beliefs associated with them.
At Motherhood Wellness Clinic, EMDR may be incorporated into treatment for concerns including trauma, distressing memories, relational or childhood wounds, anxiety, and birth trauma.
Birth Trauma
Childbirth is often expected to be one of life's most meaningful experiences. But pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period do not always unfold as expected.
A frightening delivery, emergency intervention, pregnancy complication, feeling powerless during birth, difficulty recovering, or another distressing reproductive experience can have a lasting emotional impact.
Some mothers experience intrusive memories, anxiety, hypervigilance, nightmares, difficulty bonding, avoidance, dissociation, or a painful sense that they cannot move beyond what happened.
Motherhood Wellness Clinic provides trauma-informed therapy specifically for women processing difficult or traumatic birth experiences, including the use of EMDR when appropriate.

EMDR Intensives
For some clients, a traditional weekly therapy schedule is not the best fit.
Motherhood Wellness Clinic also offers EMDR Intensives for birth trauma, providing a longer and more concentrated period of EMDR therapy focused on processing a specific traumatic experience.
The current intensive structure includes preparatory sessions to develop coping skills, review the birth story, and identify areas for processing, followed by an extended EMDR session.
An EMDR intensive may be appropriate for someone who would benefit from having more uninterrupted time to focus on trauma processing rather than dividing that work across multiple weekly appointments.

Trauma, Motherhood, and the Nervous System
Motherhood can sometimes bring old experiences to the surface.
Pregnancy, childbirth, caring for a baby, navigating relationships, or becoming responsible for a child of your own can cause you to think differently about experiences from your past.
You may begin recognizing patterns you hadn't noticed before.
You may become more aware of childhood experiences, relationships, fears, or beliefs that you want to understand differently.
Or perhaps nothing from the past feels particularly significant, but your birth or postpartum experience itself has left you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unlike yourself.
Our work is grounded in the belief that meaningful healing often requires looking beyond symptoms alone and understanding the whole person—your experiences, relationships, body, emotions, and the patterns that have developed over time.
You Don't Have to Stay Stuck in What Happened
A difficult experience can become part of your story without continuing to define how you feel every day.
Therapy can help you better understand your reactions, process experiences that continue to cause distress, and begin developing a different relationship with memories and beliefs that have felt difficult to move beyond.
Healing does not mean pretending something never happened.
It means working toward a place where what happened no longer has the same power over your present life.
At Motherhood Wellness Clinic, we provide a compassionate and trauma-informed space to help women move toward greater connection, resilience, emotional wellbeing, and freedom.
